Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)

Motorcycle Academy is based in Andover and Thruxton.We offer excellent facilities and instruction for trainees all over Hampshire. Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) was introduced in 1990 to help reduce the very high accident rate among inexperienced motorcyclists. CBT must be completed before a learner moped or motorcycle rider is allowed to ride on the road with L-plates or D-plates in Wales.

why train with us

You will need to complete a CBT if:

  • You want to ride a moped (a moped has an engine not over 50cc with maximum design speed not exceeding 50 kilometres per hour which is approximately 31 miles per hour).
  • You want to ride a motorcycle up to 125cc & are 17 years or over.
  • You are thinking about going on to take a motorcycle cycle test after either a direct access or accelerated access course.

(If you obtained your car licence before 1 February 2001 you do not need to complete a CBT to ride a moped of an engine size of no more than 50cc.)

How the course is structured.

The CBT course involves five elements all completed during one day;

  1. Introduction.
  2. Practical on-site training.
  3. Practical on-site riding.
  4. Practical on-road training.
  5. Practical on-road riding.

Our large dedicated training area in Thruxton is mapped out with junctions & road signs to imitate what students can expect out on the road. Once comfortable, students will be taken out onto the road by the instructor on no more that a ratio of 2:1.

Once confident on the bike, riders will receive a certificate valid for two years which will allow a moped or up to a 125cc motorcycle to be ridden on L-plates. The only restrictions are that riders may not carry passengers or ride on motorways.

After the two years the certificate will expire & students may take another CBT course if required, unless a full motorcycle licence has been obtained. Click here for more information on obtaining a full licence.
